PUBLIC ART FOR WIMBERLEY

In 2021 the Wimberleyarts.org board of directors established the Wimberley Valley Public Art Initiative to enhance the visual appeal of our community through the placement of high quality art at select locations throughout our Valley. The Public Art Committee, in collaboration with community partners, identifies exciting, high-profile mural projects and sculpture locations for this venture. Projects are funded, entirely or in part, through donations Wimberleyarts.org’s fund for Public Art Projects. Click to donate.

OLD KYLE ROAD CROSSWALK PROJECT

With new sidewalks and crosswalks planned for Old Kyle Road and along Ranch Road 12 between the Square and the light at FM 3237, the WimberleyArts.org Public Art team came up with a highly creative idea for enhancing them: original Wimberley-focused Haiku and street murals. Hill Country Haiku Contest WimberleyArts.org received 63 submissions within one week of announcing the Hill Country Haiku Contest’s Phase One Call for Entries. Paring the list down to The Final Four was no easy task ... so many of the entries were worthy! The selection process was double-blind: The committee did not know the names of the authors, and the voting was done by secret ballot.  The 4 winning haiku are now stamped into the sidewalk next to the new crosswalk on Old Kyle Road, each framed with artwork by talented local artists Nancy Elliott and Sharon Carter.

Nancy and Sharon have also created a road mural for the crosswalk at Old Kyle Road (between Martha Knies Park and Dos Olivos). Their design was presented to the Wimberley City Council and unanimously approved. Painting will commence during the October 3rd First Thursday Wimberley Art Crawl, which is appropriately themed, “Plein Air Everywhere.”

As Wimberley’s sidewalk expansion projects get underway next Spring, more Haiku contests and murals are planned.  If you would like to donate and help make this beautification project possible, please click here.
